Epic high fantasy book - Shadow of the Demon

Events are coming to a head. The battle for CarCamel has ended and Kaplyn is seen as the people’s saviour. Catriona, the Thracian Queen, demands that he leads the army in its fight against Trosgarth, with a dragon at his command. Kaplyn, however, has other ideas. Dragons terrify him, but he cannot fathom why; after all a dragon helped them to defeat demons in the recent conflict.

It is a conundrum, but it is not his immediate concern for Astalus, the Thracian court wizard, using magic, reveals an image of Vastra, now an old man, held captive in Aldrace. Kaplyn’s fears are realised, for if the enemy have Vastra then they must also have the second crystal from the Tree of Life. A permanent gateway to the demon world is now a reality. Kaplyn’s priority must be to recover the crystal at all costs. Abandoning the army, he sets of in pursuit of Vastra, not realising the terrible consequences of his actions, for the full horror of his links to Shastlan’s shade are about to be revealed.

As to the Dwarves, no one has heard from them, another blow as allies seem thin on the ground. Then again who would want to face Death Knights?

As an example, in my books I make use of guardian spirits. Here is a taster of what that means.

Do you or I have a Guardian Angel?

This is something I have always pondered: if there was such a thing as a guardian angel, what could it mean? It is a premise I wove into my books, first hinted at in Legacy of the Eldric and then developed more fully in Dragon Rider and Shadow of the Demon.

Many cultures have adopted guardian spirits. In North America it is Totems, or spirit guides and are usually an animal. So, apologies for pinching this idea. It is a warm feeling to believe that someone or thing is watching over us.

What is a guardian angel or spirit in my books?

I suggest that the spirit is an ancestor of the person it is looking after. This explains why some links to the guardian angel are weak, and some are stronger. For example, if the guardian spirit was a great, great uncle, then that link might be weak. If, however, the guardian angel was a father or mother, then that bond would be stronger.

Having a guardian angel or spirit gives rise to feelings such as déjà vu: a feeling of familiarity when events or places are experienced for the first time. This is perhaps the response from the guardian spirit that may have traveled to this place and it is them that is passing on the feeling of remembrance.

Now make the link to the guardian angel stronger, and what might be expected.

A stronger link to a shaol allows a person to achieve more, for example by sensing people nearby.

As mentioned, a guardian angel is usually only a tenuous link, but two people in my book benefit from a much stronger connection to theirs—a connection that has consequences for them both.

I also use guardian angels in different ways. I created a faction called the Priests of Ryoch who exploit the idea of guardian spirits for evil ends. They recruit children whom they sense have an evil guardian spirit, training them to fight and, in the case of the more powerful ones, to communicate across a battlefield. How useful would that be?

Now consider a guardian angel from another world. The shade of a dead emperor who has ravaged his own lands with dragons at his call. Wouldn’t that threaten your sanity?

That, to me, is the beauty of high fantasy: setting rules that the characters must live or die by.
